My new mobile arrived! Woo!
So, now that I have an Android phone, please inform me:

WHAT ANDROID APPS CAN'T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
I'm after useful apps, rather than games. Oh and which of the various Live Journal apps works best, if any?

------------------
And a completely off-topic question. Does anyone know of an UPBEAT cover version of the song Silent Lucidity by Queenryche? I can't seen to find any (on youtube or iTunes) and I'm a tad surprised by that.

Android apps

LJ — elJay is the one I've settled for.

Faves: Drive or Dropbox; epicurious; a good swipe keyboard (Keymonk or Go keyboard for example; your bank's app; Kindle.

Oooooo Android. AA;LSDFKJ. I JUST GOT ONE MYSELF. WHAT DID YOU GET?

I currently cannot live without the Taste.com.au app, of course Angry Birds, Livejournal, Relax and Sleep which sends bub and I off to sleep each night to pleasant sounds, and various baby-related apps which are of no consequence to you unless HELLO - you've forgotten to tell us something.

Shazam is also useful. It's an app that tells you what song you're listening to if you hold your phone up to the TV/stereo/radio/air (if you happen to be in a shopping center with music - no shit, this totally works).

I also only have the accoustic, live version of Silent Lucidity, so unfortunately I cannot help you there.

I got a Samsung Galaxy SIII. I'm kinda lost atm beyond the basics, but I did manage to transfer everything off my old phone into the new one in one go, so I feel accomplished there at least. Need to read the manual.

No forgetting. Nup.

Shall look some of these up. Thanks for the leads. I may need to purchase some add-on space or whatever.

WHAT DID YOU GET?

Favourite Andoid apps, huh? Let me name a few I think are useful:

- Equalizer: If you wanna use your phone to listen to music, this might come in handy. Has lots of presets.

- ES File Explorer: I quite like this if I want to look for files on my phone, like downloaded PDFs or something along those lines.

- Facebook, if you use it.

- Fast Reboot: Saves you the long shutdown/startup thing if you want to free your memory or if one of your apps craps out on you.

- Gauge Battery: Has battery saving options and adds battery status icons to your taskbar thingie.

- IMDb. Quite like it if you quickly wanna look something up.

- imo. A multi-account chat client for Android.

- Juice Defender: Another battery saving app, and one that actually works.

- K-9 Mail: If you want to download your POP3 e-mail to your phone, I find this one works better than the pre-installed one.

- MyPhoneExplorer: Great if you want to connect the phone to your computer and make backups or transfer data. Works much better than my stupid HTC Sync thingie.

- Photobucket: If you wanna upload pictures from your phone to your photobucket, provided you have an account.

- Skype: Don't actually use it much on my phone, but, heh.

- SoundHound: Music recognition app. Love it.

- To Do List: You can save notes with it but also create to-do or shopping lists.

- Tumblr: If you have an account it might be useful. Works quite well, but is a little slow to react sometimes.

- TweetDeck: I prefer this one over the official Twitter app because you can add multiple columns for timelines, searches, or hashtags you want to follow.

- Twitpic: If you tweet photos on a regular basis.

- Vimeo: I think Vimeo doesn't let you watch videos on an Android phone unless you use their app. I think it only works if you have a Vimeo account.

- WhatsApp: For sending text messages via internet without charge to anyone who also has WhatsApp installed. I've heard talk about it only being free of charge for one year, then they charge you, but I don't know if it's true.

- Widgetsoid: Great app if you want to customize your buttons on your desktop. It lets you add horizontal bars with shortcuts or toggle buttons for brightness, WiFi, ringtone mode, etc.

- Winamp: I'm sure there's other apps to listen to music with, but I've always been a fan of Winamp.

- YouTube: Yep, they have their own app as well.

In terms of games, Angry Birds is definitely fun. The Star Wars version of it is even better than the normal one. I also have a version of Solitaire installed, as well as Random Mahjong. Not much of a gamer myself, but those are what keep me distracted if I'm bored. :-)

I think someone mentioned in a comment you should install your bank's app. I personally would be careful with regard to doing bank transactions on your Android phone. You keep hearing about all these security leaks that Android's prone to, so I have sworn never to do anything with my phone that uses my bank data unless it's an emergency.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. The apps that I use the most are
- Evernote - for making to do lists
- Flipboard - collects news stories from other sites into different topics, e.g. travel, food, photography
- News (The Guardian, in my case)
- Facebook
- GMail
- Youtube
- Shazam - someone mentioned it above
- Chrome - for LJ/DW; I use Explorer for anything else
- LinkedIn
- Flixter
- Google goggles - haven't actually tried this, but supposedly you can take a photo of something you like in a shop and search the web for it.

The phone also has various widgets, like Googlesearch, SVoice...other S-things that I haven't tried out yet. I think S-Suggest tells you restaurants etc that are located nearby to you (if your location is switched on).

I keep the settings button on the homepage for quick access to volume changes etc - although the swipe-down screen is very useful for switching quickly to silent or turning off wi-fi.
