Oh knowledgeable peoples out in the ether; does anyone use a client for LJ and could tell me about them?

I found the FAQ sheet and the list of clients for windows, but I don't really get what it is that they do and I'm not sure which one to try or whether to try one at all.

I have this strange notion that it would be cool to be able to write entries when you can't get to the web and save them for later upload. It would be great for holidays and travelling and stuff. Is that something that a client might enable? What else can they do? Why do people use them?

Many thanks for any info.

I use the Semagic client and I love it!

I use my client for a number of reasons:
(1) buttons for ljcuts, ljcuts with text, ljcut ends etc. You just hit the button and it adds in the html
(2) it has an add link/image menu that does all of the html for you in adding links and images. All you have to do is copy paste the URL and add in your text
(3) it has a drop down menu of everyone on your friends list and all of your communities so you can just select the name you want and it adds in the html.
(4) you can post to any community you are a member of plus your own journal
(5) it has preview pictures of your icons, a drop down menu with all of your tags so you don't forget what you use
(6) you can save posts and come back later
(7) you can have posts post at a later date in time
(8) it tracks your friends list. You can create friends groups from semagic. It will tell you who you added, who has added you, what comms you've added etc.
(9) It allows you to preview your posts with all of the html
(10) You can post at any security level you would like
(11) it has options for every html tag you could ever want to you use with LJ.
(12) it has built in spell check (if you download the extra)
(13) it updates! so when LJ adds stuff, they add the options to semagic.

And that's all I can think of for now. I just really like it. It makes posting so much easier. You can post to communities, so if you are cross posting a story you just save the html, post to one, re open, post to the next.

That looks really good, I might download this for home! Won't work at uni, though, don't know what the linux client would be like...

If you look up clients in the FAQ sheets, the list they give you is for all different platforms here (http://www.livejournal.com/download/). I just linked the windows one since it's what I have.

See it IS cool! I knew I was missing something. :p

I know they listed them for Linux, I just would rather know a bit more about that client before downloading it (like you wanted to know a bit more about the windows one). Although, I probably shouldn't download it anyway, seeing as I shouldn't be playing with LJ much at uni.

Just put it on my laptop and that is VERY cool. I like the save draft function for starters. Can you use it offline too?

Yes! You do not have to be online to use it!! It's just fantastic! :-)

I've been meaning to ask this question myself as I know of one person who uses Semagic. This has been very helpful for me and I'm keen to use it coz at the moment, I actually type up all my html code and while that's cool, sometimes, I leave things out (like a " or , or >). Then it gets annoying to try to find it.

:D

Semagic seems the way to go - I use it at home and it makes life so much easier for me. Because I'm shit at typing code. And Semagic has quite a few nifty features that help you along.

Let us know what you think of it.

Another Semagic user here - and I also love it - use both at work (the blessings of being a local admin on my computer) and at home. The ability to save files and then reload them is great - as well as all the other abilities mentioned. I am a good coder, but I still use the buttons to add things like other lj users & communities as it means I don't have to remember how to spell those on my lists.

Plus I like being able to access my usre pictures easily - as well as all the tags. And the history option under Journal menu means you can edit any of your previous posts easily.
