Definitely backpack. Rucksack is almost never used any more, or might be used by an older person. I think "rucksack" usually refers to a smaller, soft-frame pack, anyhow.
Backpacks, though, cover everything from little day packs to the big things hikers use trekking in Nepal. ;-)
