Do Americans use the word "backpack"?

For what it's worth, my dictionary says yes. *g*

I've heard Americans use that term. Rucksack would also be acceptable.

Absolutely. as a noun and a verb. ;)

Rucksack may be a regional thing; I don't hear it very often...

Yes, we do - very, very common word. Rucksack is not really; at least, I haven't heard it in a decade!

Definitely backpack. Rucksack is almost never used any more, or might be used by an older person. I think "rucksack" usually refers to a smaller, soft-frame pack, anyhow.

Backpacks, though, cover everything from little day packs to the big things hikers use trekking in Nepal. ;-)

lol, you need a kid :)

Dora the Explorer has a backpack, so my guess would be yes.

Sure do! Backpack, definitely. Rucksack, no so much.
