I've been downloading some podfic of late (having great fun comparing accents and reading styles) and I can't help but notice that there are very few comments on most of them.

Is there a different fandom etiquette when it comes to podfic to other fandom works? Are the comments going elsewhere or (as I sadly suspect) are people just lame about bothering to leave comments? Or is it that the podfics are posted and reposted in so many comms that the comments are just very spread out?

From reading topics on how to podfic it looks like an awful lot of effort that goes into them, so it'd be sad if nobody acknowledges it even with a thank you, downloading type comment.

Edit: After chatting to a few people, it seems if you comment directly on the archive it may not get to the reader. So following the link backs is better. Just in case anyone was wondering.

Most podficcers seem to adopt a stance of "if you're doing it for the comments, go do something else." There's always a disappointing lack of comments on podfic (which I don't understand, btw, since podfic can make a story really come to life), unless you manage to collect something of a fanbase, like Fay Jay.

Well yeah, most fanworks you need to take that stance somewhat, I'm just amazed by the fact that there are NO comments on most of them. I always thought it was polite to at least let someone know you're grabbing it and leave a thank you.

Just seems a little rude imo. Some of them have quite delightful reading voices too. Just thought maybe I was missing something. Pity it's just people being lazy about commenting as usual.

Cheers

I do try to leave some comments if I enjoyed it, but since I download them from an archive, sometimes it's hard to go back and then back trace to the podficcer's original post to leave a comment.

If you leave comments on the archive, don't they get them? I thought they'd get them. *sad face*

I try to leave comments, especially if I have particularly loved the reading. It takes more effort and sometimes I end up being too lazy to find the links again. I sometimes send a pm to say I'm listening to their stuff and love it.

That's nice. :)

I guess I thought people might just comment that they're downloading, but as people pointed out, it could be that you found it on the archive and there isn't a link back. I profess to not understanding the whole archiving system for podfics, except that it's brilliant and a lot of work goes into it by the look of it.

New things intrigue me.

I get most of my podfic via audiofic, which might be where you're getting them from too? I like that it has a link to the story (I like to know what I'm about to listen to) and a link to the reader. Though I usually download, listen and then have to go back and find the links to leave a comment. Which really isn't that hard - just time consuming. :)

I suspect it is because there's no easy way to comment. You download, you listen elsewhere and you'd have to locate post to comment. If there was some way to comment on the go in an application and have it be posted back to original post once a net connection is present that would be nifty.

But why don't people at least say "Hi, I'm downloading, thanks!"? That's what I don't get. I get how coming back to leave feedback can get difficult. The archive even lets you comment.

It just seems odd. But I am new to this, so maybe I just don't get it.

It might be that some people who read podfic are not used to doing it that way, instead used to only commenting when they have something to say about content like with text fic?

Hmm, I'm seeing the problem here actually, because I'm downloading in batches and I don't want to hit someone's in box with ten "thank you" comments at once. So batching those, but I just realised there's link backs on the archive usually, so that's useful for later comments. :)
