I know my F-list contains Hornblower fans, so could one of you please put my befuddled brain to rights?

I'm currently watching To the Ends of the Earth, a mini-series starring Benedict Cumberbatch which was adapted from a series of novels by William Golding.

Now in this last bit I'm watching, one of the officers fixes the mainsail mast thingy (excuse my lack of seafaring terms) using hot iron and they aren't sure whether the ship will burn if it doesn't work.

Thing is, either the exact same thing happens in Hornblower or I've seen at least this part of the mini-series before. So did that happen in Hornblower too?

Nope, that didn't happen.

Although I can understand why you're getting triggery memories. There was a thing with a cannon and hot shots - coefficient of expansion. :D

Ah, could be where I'm getting confused, but I think maybe I've seen part of this series on TV many moons ago and they are just intertwining in my brain. Gosh it's a good series though. *nods*
