My vidding drought appears to be over! Hurrah! \o/ I have no photoshop on this computer, so no vid graphic. If anyone feels like making me one...well virtual hugs and cookies would be on offer for sure. Enough blather (there's plenty of that under the cuts), on to the vid! :)
Title: A Different Light
Fandom: Sherlock (clips from "A Study in Pink" only)
Music: My guiding Light by Evermore
Vidder:

Summary: John's POV. John is invalided home from Afghanistan with a psychosomatic limp, an intermittent tremor in his hand and a feeling that he doesn't quite fit. Then he meets Sherlock and learns to see the world in a different light.
Prompts: YELLOW on my
vid_the_grid Table. (Table link)
Beta thank you:
ash48 was a wonderful help with her beat-whore knockdown and useful commentary on the early drafts. She hasn't seen this final version, so any weird edits are mine alone (and I hope that transition works now, Ash!)

Vidder notes: This is my first vid in over 6 months and I feel like a noob vidder/Vegas user all over again trying to find the right buttons and what not. I never ramble over vids, because I generally just hope the content is obvious, but I'm going to break my rule and just say a few words. Read them or skip them as you like.
The first scenes are meant to give a visual impression of how London is just as daunting to John, if not more so, than the war zone he just left. It's also pointing out the sheer contrast between the two experiences. The vid is intended to show John's point of view as he is pulled into the excitement of Sherlock's world, where he learns to see the world in a different light, and simply can't resist following Sherlock into the battlefield of London. In the context of the song, Sherlock is "his guiding light". (Cheesy, sorry.) This renewed sense of adventure and purpose brings John back to life (his limp and tremor all but disappear) and by the end of the episode/vid there is an obvious mutual appreciation between Sherlock and John, a companionship and loyalty. John is no longer just following Sherlock blindly into the fray, he has a sense of purpose again.
Lyrics:I cut down the song with a less than gentle hacksaw, so these are the lyrics that you will hear in the vid, but they are not all the song lyrics.
"My Guiding Light" by Evermore
Running around this town
Looking for something
That I know I'll never find
Running out of breath
I gotta learn to see things
In a different light
[Voice over: John Watson- "That was amazing!"]
When the light turns dark
And I can't find my way
When I'm falling down
Will you take my hand, tonight?
Show me the right way
Show me the right way to go
Show me the right way to go and
I'll meet you there
[voice over: Sherlock- "Come on, John"]
My guiding light
Back on my feet again
Where you're taking me
Is still a mystery
I'm never looking back
Cos what I left was only
Gonna drag me down
Show me the right way
Show me the right way to go
Show me the right way to go and
I'll meet you
My guiding light

This was a great song choice for John's p.o.v. The story came through very clearly to me and you really showed his arc as he went from being rather shell-shocked into finding a purpose again with Sherlock. *thumbs up*
Great work, I really enjoyed it! (And yay again for vidding, woo! \o/ ) ♥!

So brilliantly edited and I loved the John's POV, how Sherlock seems so dashing to him! <3

You already know how much I love this vid but I did want to add ('cause I don't think I said this already..) I love how the vid unfolds John's story. From where he starts - alone in his room with his thoughts, to how it ends walking side by side with Sherlock. I love that final clip. I also love the way your used the road signs.
The song is perfect for this episode and the beat work (hee) is great...
Yay! for breaking the vidding drought. And with such style! Congrats sweetie. And thanks for the sneak peek. That was fun! :)

I love how well that portion just flows with the music. Him spinning in a circle and the quick cuts to the beat!

I hope you do watch Sherlock. It's only three episodes in the season, so easy to catch up on and it is brilliantly done. :)
Cheers

Have to agree with Reliand (above), love 1:10-22. I rather like sharp little sections like that than a whole vid overwhelming you.
Hooray for vidding again \o/

Thanks so much for commenting, especially as you've yet to see the show. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :D

I don't suppose you've got a download link for the file, perhaps? I just watched the streaming version (at work) and it would be nice to have a downloaded copy. Although I could zamzar it, downloading the original is usually prettier. Pretty please?
PS - your mood icon for accomplised crackes me up!

Sherlock is really cheap on Amazon.co.uk, especially with the dollar so high. I'll email you, though, once I jog my memory. *g*

I'm hoping I can get enough leave up to visit Yokiem in Scotland next year. And hopefully take in London at the same time. :)

And speaking of employer's, just downloaded your vid at work. how cool is that?
Mind you, I'm in Gosford. Just about to drive back to Sydney after typing up this reply. ;-P

Oooh I was thinking more like June (just weather wise, no other reason), but if you've got stuff lined up, I could easily go earlier. I'd love to have another person to hang out with inbetween red bus rides and museums. Nothing is actually planned yet, since it all hinges on me getting permission to take leave from the boss. I think she'll be good with it though. I hope. If you've got stuff booked, send me the dates and I'll ask whether work (and Yokiem) are amenable to April. :)

But also, Lucy is going to have another baby in March. So I kinda want to be around to help her with the new bub. That would take the tally up to 8 nieces and nephews.
Speaking of... how's your sis and her bub doing? Have you gotten to see much of them?
From:

Ooh, another bub in the family. Ha, I am so bad with kids generally. You're like Super!Aunty!Derry. I will be trying harder now though.
However, Mum and Dad have been spending a fair amount of time (sort of taking turns) helping out sis the last few weeks. My nephew is the most adorable baby ever, but he's a bit cholic-y and my sis is mad from sleep-deprivation... so pretty normal as far as these things go. *g* I think it must be getting better the last week or so, because the desperate phone calls have dropped off substantially.
I would like to go visit again, but I've had a cold, so I'm holding off until I'm less likely to bring germs with me.

The use of the street signs were not only clever but so incredibly well placed as sort of marks in John's journey, giving not only a lovely visual impact but an emotional one, too.
I read your notes before I watched the video, but even without them the video, especially the opening sequence, was clear.
The voice-overs were perfect, the pacing was flawless, the whole thing just kind of blew me away and makes me want to dive into Vegas and try to make something even half as amazing as this.
I am taking the download off 4shared because this has to go into my EPIC SHERLOCK VIDS ARE EPIC folder.
TL;DR - You are a vidding genius. The video is amazing and I want to be you when I grow up. :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed this vid. I was particularly pleased with it as I rarely do more emotional/story-telling vids.
Thanks so much again. *wanders off to work grinning*
