Internet Censorship Plan Gets the Green Light

Eeek.

I think I'm going to check out the discussion paper. It seems it may be too late for public input though. I'm annoyed this is the first I've heard of it. *wibble* Sounds like a stupid idea, especially when they're blocking more than just known child porn sites, which is what they are basing the need for this thing on.

I've been hearing whispers about it for a while now.

Like the optimist I am, I think in the long run all the inconveniences will be worth it. I mean, its not like the majority of the Australian population frequent the legal sites that might also accidentally get blocked. And I say it must be almost impossible to provide the public with a list of sites that will be censored, give the everchanging nature of the internet.

My only concern with this thing is how far the censorship will go. Will sites like LJ be blocked as well because of all the adult content on here? As for freedom of information/speech, I'm of the opinion that one cannot have total and absolute freedom, especially if it conflicts with greater interest (ie the safety of children).

But that's my point exactly. Also, who decides what sites are to be blocked and what rights do people have to dispute that? I just don't like it. Call me a pessimist is you must. But it's not going to make a lick of difference to general web security or the dangers for kids on the net...etcetera etcetera. *hands*

I'm also a little surprised at how much of it was kept under wraps, given that it affects everyone in Australia with access to the internet.

Yeah, I was too. Rinkle reckons she's known about it for at least 6 months, but she seems to be the only one.

There have been a lot of articles for a number of months on Sydney Morning Herald at least. Getup has also been running a campaign against it.

It seems to have been kept fairly quiet none-the-less. *shrugs* I've posted to the campaign.
