Summary: a short coda to episode 5.2

Sam settled into the motel mattress, feet still on the floor from where he’d sat and then just flopped back on the bed with a sigh of exhaustion. A full day of hitch hiking and walking, worry and sadness, and it all seemed too much and not enough. He was going to get straightened out, prove himself safe and reliable again and maybe one day he could go back to hunting. Someday soon maybe he could rejoin the fight, but not now.

His thoughts were yanked back to the cheap décor of the room, with its lumpy mattress and orange curtains, by the sound of his cell phone and its steady vibration. He slipped it from his pocket and flicked it on.

“Yeah?” he answered.

“Sam.” The voice was dry, emotionless and incredibly deep. Castiel.

“Cas.”

“Where are you? I need to speak to Dean.”

“Dean and I… He’s not here, Cas.”

“I will wait for him, then.”

“No, we’ve-- I’ve taken myself out of the hunt for the moment. You’ll have to call Dean direct, or Bobby. I don’t know where he is.”

“I see.” Castiel’s tone of voice stayed much the same, but Sam swore there was disapproval in it suddenly.

“What?”

“You do not think this course of action-- unwise?”

“Maybe, but it’s necessary. --Hey Cas?”

“Yes?”

“If you find God… When you find God, would you ask him for me… Would you ask him why?”

“Why?”

“Why he saved me? He had to save Dean, I get why he saved Dean, but why me? Was I just collateral, incidental-- Why would he save me, Cas?” Sam heard his voice crack, as a lump seemed to form in his throat.

“I do not know. I promise I will ask.”

“Thank you.”

“Goodbye.”

The line went dead and Sam took a deep breath. His eyes unconsciously traced the water stains on the ceiling above him. His thoughts were of beings from above and below and questions he had no way of answering.

He hoped Dean was okay.

Aww. I wondered if Castiel had called Sam first before Bobby, and I can totally see Sam questioning why he had been taken out of there along with Dean. Poor, poor Sam. :(

Yeah, I actually wrote this before I watched 5.3 and then I figured it still fit, so I'd better post it...even if it's not that well written. I just think it's what Sam would be wondering... and now with the end of 5.3 we have a different possible explanation and I wonder if Sam is thinking, "why didn't he just kill me?" Which is even more sad. Poor honey! :(

Thank you! :)

I knoooow, you could see that's what he was thinking during that scene. Why was he saved when this whole mess could be avoided if he just... stopped existing. :(

I'm enjoying these little one-shots. :)

I liked that Sam had regained a little hopefulness in 5.3 - which was obviously duly shattered by Lucifer's appearance - but I was also thinking that he's got to be thinking that if it was God who saved him from the convent and cleansed him of the demon blood so he wouldn't go through withdrawal again then it stands to reason that there's so measure of forgiveness out there for him, even if he can't forgive himself just yet.

Yeah, especially when Sam was the believer. He prayed every day, so he'd want to believe God had given him a second chance, but I think he'd be wondering why and whether there was a purpose to it all. *nods*

Thanks for reading. :)

I really enjoyed that! I was definitely curious as to why Castiel hadn't called Sam, since he did in Good God, Y'all!.

Awe so heartbreaking but I can definitely see this happening! I really hope it was God that saved them lol. Great little story, I loved it! =)

Thank you. Yeah, me too. I wonder if it isn't just a more powerful angel or something. Kripke is great at messing with us all. :)

Oh yes. Very nice.

If God had saved them why did he save Sam and if Lucifer saved them why did he save Dean? Hmm... thought provoking...

But if god is omnipotent he knows what going to happen anyway and I'm sure Sam will play a part in saving the world *nods enthusiastically* .... therefore he had to save Sam too... :)

Boy. I'm rambly today...

Good fic. I'm enjoying your stories hun.

I wouldn't be surprised if in Kripke's world God is an arrogant twat who really knows nothing and is living off past glories, but then that might annoy middle mass America, so he's probably either not there at all or he's an omnipotent know-it-all. lol You were saying you were rambling?? It'll be interesting to see how they hande God if he is there, because, well...sensitve topic there, y/y? Thanks for reading! Sam would like your logic. :)

Or She. I wouldn't put it past him....

Maybe that's why Pamela had to die.... *ponders* *G*

Oooh there's fic in that. *nods* I did have the thought He could be a She. I mean Lucifer took the form of a woman. :)

Oh, this just makes me want to weep for Sam. Why, indeed ... I hope he finds out. I hope one day God answers. And I want Sam and Dean both to be okay.

Eventually. *clings* Beautiful work, my dear.

Thank you, Erin. You're so sweet. :)
I hope he gets answers too and they're ones he wants to hear.
