I've met North Americans who have the same difficulty with Australian/New Zealand and English/Scottish. So I don't feel too bad about not being sure whether Wolverine was in Canada or not based on the accents of the surrounding cast. There's just some accents that are too close to call unless you're actually from the continent involved.
I can pick some Canadian accents. But it may be because my mum is Canadian and they have certain things that they do differently. A bit like NZ vs Aussie. Hugh kept throwing in bits of Australian accent and well, most Aussie actors have a fairly neutral accent that passes as whatever they want it to. :P
I noticed in the credits that it was filmed in Australia and NZ (parts of it anyway) which probably accounts for all the Aussies. The old guy (with the wife) in the farm house... he's in so many Aussie films. Spider and Rose being one of my favourite films ever and he is in that.
