I decided I wanted to write something, so I looked up the word of the day and wrote a quick drabble.

Title: Sine qua non
Author: [livejournal.com profile] starrylizard
Fandom: Supernatural
word count: 100
Rating: Drabble, Gen, G, Episode coda to Mystery Spot
Summary: Sine qua non \sin-ih-kwah-NON; -NOHN; sy-nih-kway-\, noun: An essential condition or element; an indispensable thing. From the Late Latin, literally "without which not."

Sam watches his brother sleep. He’s aware if Dean was awake he’d call him creepy, throw pillows and old socks to make him stop, but right now he can’t help it.

Each time his eyes slide shut, each time the darkness of sleep reaches to pull him under, he jams his eyelids open and stares at his brother. Safe and breathing, unaware of all Sam has been through for him.

And between one slow, tired blink and the next, between darkness and reality, Sam swears he’s never going to lose his brother again.

He knows what he’s capable of now.

Lovely. Brief and meaningful. Haven't yet seen Mystery Spot (don't mind being spoiled, either, I always turn to the back of books to the horror of many of my friends) but am very, very, very much looking forward to it.

Thank you! :)
I'm kinda the opposite. I don't like spoilers much, beyond character spoilers and what not. You'll love this ep, it's hilarious and angsty rolled into one.

how do you people DO that?! I can't pack that much emotion into so few words. That was gorgeous ♥

Thank you! Glad it works!

I &hearts drabbles! I tend to find it takes a few minutes to write and about fifteen to figure out how to cut it down to exactly 100 words. They either happen or they don't. :)

First, randomness. Your fic title made me have a flashback to my days as a Haem registrar. One of my bosses loved putting Latin phrases in his reports and sine qua non was one of his favourites. A doctor being pretentious? NEVAH!!! :-D

Second, squeefulness. Lovely drabble y'got there. Captures the essential journey Sam made in the ep in just a few short words. Very, very neatly done.

Hee! Doctors, pretentious? Sounds like a word my PhD supervisor would've loved actually. :P

And thank you! I do love how drabbles can say so much! I'm glad I hit the mark. :)

Oh Sam!

I love this line:
And between one slow, tired blink and the next, between darkness and reality, Sam swears he’s never going to lose his brother again.

You've really captured Sam's thoughts with so much emotion in just 100 words. Very nicely done.

Great drabble! Packs all the punch it needs. Fantastic.

PS: LOVE the moodtheme ;)

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :)

I know, the moodtheme is awesome! It's over here (http://fallen-iceangel.livejournal.com/116057.html) if you want it. :)

Very nicely done. I like the mix of weariness and grim determination. And yeah, I bet Sam does spend that first night mostly staring at Dean.

Favorite lines:

And between one slow, tired blink and the next, between darkness and reality, Sam swears he’s never going to lose his brother again.

He knows what he’s capable of now.

Oh, Sam.

"Sam swears he’s never going to lose his brother again.
He knows what he’s capable of now."

Yep, that's pretty much what that part of the episode taught us isn't it. It growed him up. Last week, Dean became ready to be saved. Now, he's ready to save Dean.

Exactly! I mean he always said he would save Dean, but now he knows he'll save Dean. Thank you for your comments. :)

I saw that 'word of the day' and thought that it's just begging for a Spn-fic!

And then came this!
*smishes you madly*

Thank you!

Poor Sam.
So much in so few words.
Thank you.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. *is happily smished*

P.S. I cackled madly when the next day another site with Word of the Day had Poltergeist!

Yep, he does know what he's capable of now - and it's a bit scary, I'm sure. But, he also knows that he's got the determination and grit to find a way to break that deal.
