Vidding is kinda evil and kinda sexy - like Evil!Sam.
Hence the icon.

It's like this slightly highly addictive creative process, that sucks time and energy and valuable sleep (because I seem to be up until 3am getting that scene just right)and yet there's not much feedback for it. It's really just an evil yet enjoyable process. And I thought I had it bad when I was using WMM, but now I have Vegas it just takes me ten times longer to make a vid, because I keep thinking that I have the means to make it perfect when before I would have settled for "good enough."

Also, I can get 16 comments for a 100 word drabble. I get over 200 hits and downloads of a vid and hardly any comments. It's slightly disconcerting and I wonder if this is just the plight of vidders, or are my vids needing a lot of improvement. The plight, oh my...that sounds whiny! I don't mean it that way. :P

I do wish people would give con crit, but then I wish that for my fic too and it never happens there either.

Oh well, I think my vidding muse has taken a holiday at present - or I should say my vidding muse is still throwing ideas at me, but my will to vid is on the decline. Eh, it always comes back.

I started vidding Madonna's - Die another day. Next day, Yokiem's points me to MM's Heroes vid to the same song and a few days later someone posted a SPN vid and just the other day a CSI one -- all to the same song. *facepalm* Oh I am sooo unoriginal. I'm not watching them until I'm finished damnit.

*peers at her half-finished SPN vid*

No, I totally get it. Vidders and artists put s much effort into their work as writers, often more, and yet they barely get commented on. It's a pet peeve of mine. I think it has something to do with the fact that you glance at a graphic, and it takes just a few minutes to watch a vid, but you have to make an effort to read a fic. It's easier to dismiss things like vids and art because you tend to just glance at them.

Yeah maybe. It has the effect to make you wonder if your vid sucks sometimes. But I just keep reminding myself that I do it for my own fun and if it's not the case I shouldn't do it.

I have received a fair bit of positive feedback of late too. I think I'm just noticing it again, because I've been posting to filefront and it gives me all the dl stats

I get those kinds of stats from my webserver. Some of the covers I made during the 14 Valentines thing were getting nearly 1000 unique hits, yet I think the most comments I got was ike 15.

What I find really insulting is when you see someone reccing your work in their journal and gushing over it, but they never bother commenting in the first place. What, you can take a couple of minutes to post to your own journal, but not 30 seconds to comment to the creator?

I have to agree with that. If it's someone on your flist, it's a little different as you'll see their rec, but someone else completely random - how are you meant to know that they recced it and therefore must have liked it?

From: [identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com

Yeah, true. It happens a lot. If I rec something, even meta, I usually try to leave a comment saying I recced it if nothing else.

Also think about the statistics for fic on ff.net. I've got some fics where I've got 1000 hits and 10 comments, or 200 hits and no comments.

But, I agree that in general, people need to comment more!!! Give the creators of art (of any sort) some feedback.

However, con crit a lot of people find really hard to give for fic, particularly when you can't find anything wrong with it (which by the time you post your fics, I can't).

Hee! Like I said, I don't mean to whine. My post was about vidding being addictive and bad for your health. *grins stupidly*

Nah, just addressing that point of the post. You weren't whining, you were bringing up a valid point that's a big issue in a lot of fandoms.

I've just started noticing all the vidding competitions on the web. You enter yourself and most people with a decent vid end up with a banner for their trouble. I know why people enter them now and I appreciate them being there.

I tend suck at giving feedback to all the people who deserve it myself. So, I'm not being judgemental.

But unless you are a BNF of vidding with your own cheersquad or just have supportive (ie commenty-type) friends - ie friends who suck less than I do. Well, unless you fall into those categories, vids don't tend to get a lot of feedback comments in general. And yes, it could be partly because it's easy to sit back and watch a vid (over and over), but it takes a bit of effort to hit the comment/reply button or send an email.

And fics? Ever notice how WIP get a lot more comments while they are being posted than oneshots (even accounting for the different number of chapters)? If people think commenting will get them something (like more chapters quicker) then they'll comment. If it's a oneshot and they'll get no more whether they comment or not, the "not" option is often taken.

And have I mentioned before my tendency to ramble in random comment posts?

Anyways, got to hit the road (back to Sydney) soon.

I have to admit, while I've recc'd vids, I've very rarely reviewed them. It has to do with the process of downloading. By the time you've downloaded the vid (and for me on dial-up that's hours later), you've clicked away from the comment page. So to review you've got to find the post where you originally ... ah, heck, it's a bother. YouTube works better because you view the vid there and the comment form is still in front of you.

I understand that. I too have dialup most of the time and I tend to keep the tab open in my browser so I can reiew later, but I wouldn't expect everyone to do that.

I try to have my vids streaming these days so the comment box is right there. :)

Anyway, it's not really a big deal, I just like to whinge when I'm bored. :P
