Men of Action by [livejournal.com profile] boochicken (Gen, G)

This is hilarious! Poor little team action figures. :P

On another note, I was pleasantly surprised to find this very interesting, well-thought out and presented essay dealing with the latest LJ deletions and the responsibilities of fanfic writers.

If you're at all interested, go have a look. Responsible fanfic

I glanced at this essay earlier today, linked from [livejournal.com profile] cofax7's LJ. I haven't had the time to read through it thoroughly so I haven't responded, but my first reaction is to disagree with it utterly. Fact and Fantasy are separate, not only in that fanfiction characters are not real, but also in the way fiction is perceived differently by the reader as evidenced by the fact that a lot of writers who write incest are incest survivors -- for example, me.

I've written lots of incest stories and will continue to write more. The thought that my stories in any way promote incest is akin to the idea that teaching sex education to teens promotes premarital sex. It's the same concept that if we don't talk about it, it will go away. Bullshit.

You know what this article boils down to really? [livejournal.com profile] heatherly doesn't like incest and chan and non-con stories, and doesn't want to be associated with them in fandom. My immediate knee-jerk response to that is: Tough shit.

By her definition Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" was irresponsible and should not have been written given the predictable reaction of mainstream Muslims.

Responsible my ass... I read it again later when it doesn't piss me off so much.

Oh, I didn't think she was saying that at all. She's very open about not liking that kind of fiction, true (and obciously she's writing with that perspective in mind), but I felt she was simply pointing out that these things should be taken into account when writing. She says several times that she isn't asking people not to write these stories or telling them they are incorrect to write them.

Perhaps you should read it before getting too annoyed, since its a valid perspective. Different people view things differently and she does pose some valid points about how fandom may be viewed by outsiders etc.

Sorry if I've offended you in any way. It's not my intention.

You haven't offended me, she has -- well, she's pissed me off.

Her points are carefully worded, but it boils down to:

Disclaimerdisclaimdisclaimerdisclaimer--I'm for free speech, really!

Rape is bad. (Implied: if you write it, you must not know this.)

Incest is bad. (Implied: if you write it, you must not know this.)

Child abuse is bad. (Implied: if you write it, you must not know this.)

Writing these stories will offend outsiders. (Implied: if you write them, you must not know this.)

Therefore, you should be aware that people ([livejournal.com profile] heatherly included) will react badly.

Therefore, you should self-edit, which isn't the same as a lack of free speech (disclaimerdisclaimerdisclaimer!) but rather it's writing responsibly. Yes, that's what it is.

And here I thought the Department of Defense had cornered the market on euphemisms.

See that isn't how I read it.

Heatherly does say that it all depends on the person. Some people who have experienced these kinds of things do write and read them, others don't and find them highly offensive and a lot of the real world find them offensive.

Where you see implied: if you write it, you must not know this.

I see implied: if you write it, she hopes you are aware that others may view it differently and that there are real life issues that are very serious.

So if you're going "well duh!" then you know that, so it's not a problem. I would have thought her main point was just be aware that the people outside of the fandom bubble are likely to view it differently.

I hope you won't mind me contradicting you here, but I just wanted to have my say. You're of course free to continue to disagree.

...she hopes you are aware that others may view it differently and that there are real life issues that are very serious.

My answer isn't "well, duh" -- though, yeah, that applies. It's "tough shit."

Do you honestly think that anyone who writes chan doesn't know it's disturbing to some people? Why warn for it if it's a surprise that it bothers some?

Likewise, I'm fully aware that are those who dislike slash, and who would be deeply disturbed that I write it (or that it even exists). I've had long arguments with those types of people on the barrow-downs in the Lord of the Rings fandom.

I have no intention of giving one millimeter to those people, or to [livejournal.com profile] heatherly. She and the anti-slash people (there's no difference) are going to have to suck it up and learn how to read warnings and use the Back button.
