Oh it was a very simple problem, known as a num lock. *dies of embarrassment* I figured it out this morning and then had to try loads of button combinations until I could turn it off.
The weird thing, though, the IT guy called back after I'd figured it out and said "did you try the num lock?" Apparently four other queries in the last two days have been the same thing and even his own computer did it and he thought he had a virus too until he figured out it was the num lock. Makes me wonder if there isn't a weird little virus switching on num locks. I've never even used that key.
Gah! *facepalm* At least my laptop now works fine, so I can get some work done.
