For anyone not aware of it, apparently the latest version (version 11) of Windows Media Player contains a program that prevents your computer from playing DVDs not only on WMP, but on other media programs as well. Apparently it's very hard to remove from your computer and it sounds like you really don't want to download it.
The warning post was over HERE
If anyone knows more about this and can verify it, please let me know. I'm afraid my computer will automatically update. *wibbles*
Damn you Microsoft!
ETA: Sounds like it may be a codec issue clicky
Oh and apparently it doesn't play songs purchased through itunes! This seems untrue, since PC Magazine goes on about how well it integrates itunes. clicky
Hmmm, This is interesting! O_o Some people found that changing the computer date fixed it??
Yet another person getting annoyed Might be a setup problem??
So from what Rinne and I could dig up, it looks like it might be system specific and only some people are having issues. Also, there's a distinct possibility that the problem is the program deleting codecs or drivers that other programs also use. Either way, it's probably not as bad as the original post suggested. Hmmm.

... I think I'll just keep verison 10... And if it forces me to update, I'll just find another player to use. Maybe I'll just use Nero Showtime fill time. It plays everything... Well, except for RM files...

There were some reports on the vidding threads that WMP v11 was causing a whole heap of problems for some people...namely preventing them from playing any DVDs on any media programs.
Seems though that most people who have updated to v11 are fine with it, so it's likely only on some people's systems. Seems likely that it is wiping out some shared codecs or whatever. Basically if you've already dled it and it's working, ignore the post (though I'd be inclined to make sure DVDs are still playing - commercial proper DVDs that is).
If you haven't dled it, then just be wary if you chose to update. If the program doesn't install properly, or you have issues then you can revert to v10 and at least you'll know where the problems came from.
Hope that clears it up.
I'm sitting on version 10 until I hear more information. I can't be bothered having to reinstall v10 later if there's a problem. *shrugs*
