For anyone not aware of it, apparently the latest version (version 11) of Windows Media Player contains a program that prevents your computer from playing DVDs not only on WMP, but on other media programs as well. Apparently it's very hard to remove from your computer and it sounds like you really don't want to download it.

The warning post was over HERE

If anyone knows more about this and can verify it, please let me know. I'm afraid my computer will automatically update. *wibbles*

Damn you Microsoft!

ETA: Sounds like it may be a codec issue clicky

Oh and apparently it doesn't play songs purchased through itunes! This seems untrue, since PC Magazine goes on about how well it integrates itunes. clicky

Hmmm, This is interesting! O_o Some people found that changing the computer date fixed it??

Yet another person getting annoyed Might be a setup problem??

So from what Rinne and I could dig up, it looks like it might be system specific and only some people are having issues. Also, there's a distinct possibility that the problem is the program deleting codecs or drivers that other programs also use. Either way, it's probably not as bad as the original post suggested. Hmmm.

...Fuck, that explains a lot. I've been struggling to play any video files since I upgraded.

Rinne and I are wondering if the installtion just deletes a bunch of codecs that other programs are also using, so it may just be that you need to reinstall a bunch of codecs??

How weird is this? clicky (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/community/newsgroups/WindowsMedia/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsmedia&tid=c67b3aee-99a8-45e0-a1b3-b29542422866&lang=en&cr=US&p=1)

Going out to a post wedding dinner now - but I don't have problems with playing anything even though I do use WMP 11.

However, you've got me worried...

If your other media programs are working and you can play DVDs then I doubt you have a problem. Rinne searched some forums and things and only some people have issues and they seem related to the program not fully installing in the first place. System specific from the looks of it.

Bazuh?

... I think I'll just keep verison 10... And if it forces me to update, I'll just find another player to use. Maybe I'll just use Nero Showtime fill time. It plays everything... Well, except for RM files...

Yeah, I still have version 10. I don't think it automatically updates, since it isn't considered a vital part of the system. Lucky! I'll just wait to see if Microsoft finds a fix for whatever is going wrong.

Ummmm. Well I'm confused too...hence the rather confused post.

There were some reports on the vidding threads that WMP v11 was causing a whole heap of problems for some people...namely preventing them from playing any DVDs on any media programs.

Seems though that most people who have updated to v11 are fine with it, so it's likely only on some people's systems. Seems likely that it is wiping out some shared codecs or whatever. Basically if you've already dled it and it's working, ignore the post (though I'd be inclined to make sure DVDs are still playing - commercial proper DVDs that is).

If you haven't dled it, then just be wary if you chose to update. If the program doesn't install properly, or you have issues then you can revert to v10 and at least you'll know where the problems came from.

Hope that clears it up.

I'm sitting on version 10 until I hear more information. I can't be bothered having to reinstall v10 later if there's a problem. *shrugs*

ok, I'll just stick with version 10 then ty. Who knew it could be so confusing? Thanks for this help though! :-)
