So, today North Korea set off it's first nuclear test. Scary doesn't quite cover it. I guess it's been a long while coming though. It's just the last thing our planet needs - one more country with nuclear weapons capabilities running around showing off it's new toys. *sighs* I almost cried in the gym when I read the headline on the tv.

That's all it is too. A flexing of muscles. One country's leader showing what big boys they are; they have made cool toys too. Otherwise, why let it off? I mean it must cost a hefty bit of money to build a bomb and you can only use it once. It's bad for the environment and it's bloody dangerous. Sure the explosion was underground, but it'll need to be sealed off and kept from leaking for a very long time. If all they wanted was to show that they had the capability, surely they could have got a few UN officials in there with geiger counters.

Anyway, I found this article interesting. Link Here (The link came from Googlemail.com.) It talks about it in a slightly more rational and global sense, rather than just "oh noes". I'm not good at political stuff, since my head tends to be stuck in the sand. However, this confirms much of what I thought of the test. ie. a flexing of muscles, attention seeking and showing off. (I'll point out that it is obviously an opinion piece, so it's one person's perspective.)

Dear World,

You're kinda fucked up. Stop that.

Love, me.

It's just... when showing off involves blowing up a nuclear bomb, there's something very messed up.

My thoughts were that it was a pity that North Korea don't think to feed their population rather than set off nuclear bombs.

Thanks for the link

What pisses me off is that the population is starving at the expense of this military posturing. And while reading about the true capabilities of the "nuclear weapons" is reassuring, North Korea's attitude does scare me. They're getting desperate, and they're not backing down. And none of the other world powers can really back down either, can they? It makes me wonder where it'll all end. Get a rat in a corner and he'll bite.

Re: Thanks for the link

It always seemed to me that the one things stopping any country from firing a nuclear weapon on another country, is that the retaliation would be the same. Soon everyone would be firing on everyone and thus no one sets off that first bomb. I just hope I'm not around when someone takes that step.

At this point I still see the moves of N Korea as posturing and nothing more. I just hope it stays that way. Like I say, I'm not exactly equipped to discuss politics though. My knowledge is very small.

North Korea is the country that scares me the most in the world. It's organised, isolated and not impressed by anyone else.

Also very much run by men... anyone else noticing a pattern here??
