The thing about the Dalai Lama is that he takes something that in essence you already know, but don't always think about, and then he puts that thought into such simple terms that it just smacks you in the face and you go "well dah! Why didn't I think of it that way?" and wander off feeling sheepish.

He is a very wise man.

This one is going to be printed and hung up somewhere in my house, because it's what I need to remember right now.

Everyday, as soon as you get up, you can develop a sincere positive motivation, thinking, 'I will utilise this day in a more positive way. I should not waste this very day.' And then, at night before bed, check what you've done, asking yourself, 'Did I utilise this day as I planned?'
- His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama

I'm not sure when I stopped doing this, but I just realised I used to get up with a sense of purpose, and now it's more like a sense of defeat before the day has even started. Food for thought... for me anyway.

i saw him about 2 weeks ago. he came to my school to talk. it was pretty awsome. it was very simple, but he said not to expect anything from him. hehe. sadly, the people that this doesnt seem like common sense to, were probably not there.

OMG! You met him/saw him speak. That's so wonderful!

I just bought a tiny book that has quotes from him on how to achieve happiness. I feel like such a Westerner, sitting around reading his quotes and probably not getting all the messages, but it just feels like I keep learning new things whenever I hear him on the tv or read things he's said. I'd love to learn more.

I'm contemplating going to these classes on meditation, where they also teach you about Buddhism. I'm just so curious.

He taught about this in 1990, Washington, D.C., to a collection of about 100 students. If you want to know more about the context of the quote I can probably scrape my memory for what he said.

Sure, I'd love that and I always love your insights too.

There was a quote about karma in the little book I bought too and how we can't be complacent and assume it's all fate (or something to that effect) and it reminded me of one of the first posts I ever read in your lj... :)

He is a very wise man. I have his book The Art of Living and I have a little quote book. As you said, most of the stuff in it is just common sense, but it's very easy to lose sight of the simple truths that he talks about.

That quote that you wrote would be very appropriate for my procrastinating self!

Yup, I'm terrible at procrastinating and have very little motivation these days. I'm trying to turn that around though. Especially on teh whole thesis thing. I have about 4 months to write up. Ahhhhhhrrg! *panic*

I love finding inspirational quotes and things. I only found out recently that my mum collects them in a folder, so maybe I get it from her. :)
