On Amazon.com - Apprently there is now an Amazon.com.au. SHIT!

We're pleased to inform you that you can now shop for eBooks, apps and games at Amazon.com.au. We have been working hard to bring you a great selection of eBooks, including Australian best sellers and many titles that are exclusive to Kindle. You will also have access to Amazon Appstore’s great selection of quality Android apps, games and a growing library of Australian favourites. You can read local customer reviews, review updated Australian best sellers and purchase eBooks, apps and games in Australian Dollars.

To take advantage of the great selection, you can simply make Amazon.com.au your default store for digital content by clicking the button below. You do not need to create a new account and you can continue to shop for physical goods at Amazon.com or at Amazon.co.uk.

What will happen after you make Amazon.com.au your default store for digital content?

• You will be able to shop for Kindle eBooks, apps and games at Amazon.com.au. You can continue to purchase physical goods at Amazon.com in US Dollars or at Amazon.co.uk in British Pounds.
• You will continue to have access to all of your past eBook and app purchases.
• If you currently have magazine or newspaper subscriptions, they will be cancelled and you will receive a pro-rated refund.
• If you have purchased Audiobooks from Audible.com or Audible.co.uk, you can transfer them to the Australian marketplace by signing in to your account at www.audible.com.au and following the on-screen instructions. If you have purchased audiobooks from Audible.de, you will no longer be able to access those from the Audiobooks section on your Kindle Fire device.

• Amazon.com.au supports Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Now I haven't purchased anything from Amazon.de, but can they really do that? I mean this is stuff people have PAID for. This is where hard copy is so much better. They can't revoke your access to a paperback, just because they want more money.

I bet these ebooks are at least twice the price too. F-ing Australia Tax -- the term we use to describe the fact that all electronic goods, though purchased form the same site on the net as Americans use, will cost us up to 10x (I kid you not) more than if we had an American IP address. *GAH!*

Maybe they're not explaining themselves well? That doesn't seem right.

Edited to add phooey, there's no video section. I've been watching some Aussie shows lately and was hoping for an easy way to look for more.

Yeah, just ebooks so far. If you're just wanting to browse, have a look at the abc store website. https://shop.abc.net.au/
I wouldn't recommend buying form there, as they are usually expensive (JB HiFi is cheaper), but it's a nice place to browse. :)

I just checked some of the kindle titles I bought over the last few months. They're literally twice the price on the au site compared to the uk site, taking into consideration the exchange rate. This book I bought for £3.45 from Amazon UK is $11.99 on Amazon AU.

I mean, SERIOUSLY?!

People are so surprised when I tell them a lot of things are actually cheaper in the UK than in Australia.

Yeah, and I've been informed there's a smaller catalogue too. Seems we don't have to switch though, so I'm keeping my American account until they make me.

*points at icon* That sums up my reaction right now.

You know, that's one reason why I've been so uneasy about making a total jump over to digital for things like books, because, EXACTLY, they can't (yet ;) ) come to your house and yank your paperbook away from you because of a policy change/glitch/desire to make you have to buy it again and pay more for it this time/etc. :S

That's just so wrong in so many ways! >:[

Yeah! Though I now realise (so it seems) that they can't force us to change. I can still access the American ebooks site I think. SO I am not changing! Up yours Amazon!
