I thought I'd finally do that vidding meme that everyone has done months ago. It's been on my list of meme's that I've enjoyed reading on the flist. My vids are all listed over here in case I'm too lazy to link as I talk. :)
1.)When did you first start vidding? January 2006 was when I posted my first vid: Ghost Busters (SGA).
2) What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it? I got interested about 6 months earlier, when someone on Neopets told me about a vid and pointed it out. Then I googled and found a bunch on people's websites, mostly in SGA fandom and mostly fun vids about McKay. I just thought it was a great idea and I emailed one person and they told me about WMM and how it was probably already on my PC. Once I had an LJ and found the underground vidding fandom, I friended a few of the better vidders I could see and started plaguing a few with questions.
derry667 in particular. *squish*
3) What do you or have you vidded? Mostly Stargate Atlantis and Supernatural. There's also a Doctor Who vid and A Torchwood vid and a couple of crossovers: Supernatural/Heroes and Supernatural/The Labyrinth (movie).
4) Where do you draw your inspiration from for vids? Is it the song? An idea? Someone else? Usually some weird part of my brain just starts sending fandom images to me while I'm listening to a song. Then, if I'm in the mood to let my vidding brain win, I'll listen to it a whole bunch of times on repeat and cement those images there, so when I get home I'm itching to get vidding. I've also made a vid for a friend's story and done a few requests that caught my fancy and on occasion I just vid something random (usually short) in order to try out a style or effect I've seen.
5) What was your favorite video to make or do? Probably that's a tie for Atlantis Royale and The Heist for similar reasons. They both were ideas that I'd had floating around in my brain for months before I started making them and so the clip choices were really easy and the vids just flowed. The fact that I had a plan showed, I think, because they both got a really warm and happy fan reception, which made them all the more precious to me.
The difference in the vids is that I made Atlantis Royale in a single day/night of feverish vidding where I went to bed at 7am. I would have probably cut the ending a little shorter if I'd had any brain cells left at that point. :P
The Heist, on the other hand, was my first AU vid and my first Vegas vid and it took me weeks to make, but I was so happy the whole time. I was simply figuring out the program's functions and initially didn't expect to even get a vid worth posting, but it turned out pretty nicely and it was something really different to what Supernatural fandom usually produces.
6) What was your least favorite video to make or do? I'd have to say The Real World. I nabbed it as a prompt for an August-fest gift and I was suddenly so worried it wouldn't be good enough. I'd never made a vid for anyone like that before. It was also the first time I made an episodic vid and the song clocked in at 4:24 minutes and I was having trouble deciding how to fill the time with the limited clips. In the end I was really quite proud of it though and I think it does justice to the episode and the song. :)
7) Which video are you most proud of? Probably The Heist. It's not anywhere near perfect, but it was my first Vegas vid and I got such a thrill making it that I just have a soft spot for it now. I'm also rather proud of Shut Up and Drive, because every time I watch it I break out into a grin.
8) What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten? Wow, I'm not sure. I don't think I've ever received any nasty feedback. From day one, people have been so very helpful with the comments they've left me. Other vidders are constantly leaving me con. crit. of the really positive kind that's helpful at the level I'm at, at that time. And I've recieved some wonderful morale boosting squee from many lovely people.
I think the best feedback was someone nominating my very first vid Ghost Busters for a Stargate Fan Award and then it freaking won Best Humour!! I mean, the vid is full of flashes (as kindly pointed out to me in the comments) and I looked at some of the competition and I was just stunned and amazed.
9.)What is your opinion on clip theft? Earlier, I would have said "meh, whatever." But earlier, I was using WMM and I wasn't changing much about them. I think when someone takes clips which you've worked hard to manipulate to look a certain way, it galls, but I can deal with it. I've seen several of my clips used this way. The vids are usually pretty crap, since all the clips are different colours and styles. When they take whole sequences, or even whole vids, and stick them to new music and claim them as their own work, then I join the grumbling mass of vidders that get pretty grumpy and I will leave politely worded comments telling them that what they've done is very uncool. I know the effort that goes into the vids and how attached a vidder becomes to the finished product and then to see someone else claim credit is just nasty.
10) Favorite genre to vid to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU)? Definitely comedy. I have the most fun vidding complete crack and I get some of the nicest responses from people who I've made laugh when they're having a bad day and it is just spreading bit of joy. I do love making action vids these days too though. Just some fast music with quick cuts and zooms and it's loads of fun to make... requires little thought... and well, people seem to love watching them. :)
11) Favorite pairing(s)? None really. I'm mostly a gen girl or whatever is in canon.
12) What just drives you up the wall when it comes to vidding? When I want to do something and can't figure out how to get the effect I want. Or when I can't find the clips I want, when I know I've seen it. Also, the way I loose interest half-way through a song... and then usually cut it, because I know it'll just get crap.
13) Is vidding a pastime, hobby or something to help gain experience to do more later in life? Just a hobby. Though I would love to make it more somehow. I'm hoping to move into publicising organisations and science in general, so maybe one day I'll be able to use my new vidding skills for real life purposes. Who knows.
14) What is your latest project or idea for your next vid if your muse isn't dead? Oh, I don't know. I have several ideas for Supernatural, but to be honest, I'm trying to vid other fandoms again. I'd love to play more with Doctor Who, so maybe this season will inspire me.
15) Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to vid or is a newbie? Watch LOTS of vids and have fun doing it. Don't get worried if your vids don't look like the best vids out there right away. If you find something that you like, then don't be ashamed to attempt to replicate the style. I am totally unashamed to say I have attempted to replicate other vidders styles I admire and I'm only just starting to figure out what really suits me. My vids are an eclectic mix and some work far better than others, but I enjoyed playing around with them all. The experimenting is half the fun. I'm not saying to always do this, but as a learning experience, it can be really helpful.
Ask other vidders how something was done. You'd be amazed how helpful (and how in depth) other vidders will be and even if it's outside your skill-set now, you'll suddenly remember it later when it is possible. Also, they can often point you to great help sites and tutorials that they themselves have used. Don't be intimidated by the big vidders. Most of them are helpful, many are delightfully meek and even chuffed to be asked questions. Even if they are the type to act holier-than-though, just remember that most of them started with WMM and a lot of questions just like you.
Above all, remember to vid stuff you like and enjoy. If you're not having any fun, then there's no point. Vid for yourself.
