"Miss Morstan and I stood together, and her hand was in mine. A wondrous subtle thing is love, for here were we two who had never seen each other before that day, between whom no word or even look of affection had ever passed, and yet now in an hour of trouble our hands instinctively sought for each other. I have marvelled at it since, but at the time it seemed the most natural thing that I should go out to her so, and, as she has often told me, there was in her also the instinct to turn to me for comfort and protection. So we stood hand in hand, like two children, and there was peace in our hearts for all the dark things that surrounded us." ~ John Watson in the Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

So romantic. Seriously. John/Mary are just gorgeous.
And the whole scene with the empty chest and they're both so relieved. Just, *sigh*.
Watson, you delightfully romantic man. I may be crushing on an imaginary character right now.

Heh Watson was my favorite character and then BBC Sherlock came along and now I like them both equally

He's really very adorable in the books and in Sherlock. :)

I like Sherlock and Watson equally, I just think Watson is very sweet with his romanticism. It's a nice foil to Sherlock's supposed disinterest in all affairs of the heart of course.

Watson was the humanism and the person to relate to in the books and Sherlock for all his brilliance and fascinating character just didn't appeal to me as much as watson did. But now I think when I go back to the books i just might see Sherlock with a different eye.

Oh, I adore Watson, and have for years. My favourite bit in the whole canon is when he finally gets his due from Holmes in "The Three Garridebs":

In an instant he had whisked out a revolver from his breast and had fired two shots. I felt a sudden hot sear as if a red-hot iron had been pressed to my thigh. There was a crash as Holmes's pistol came down on the man's head. I had a vision of him sprawling upon the floor with blood running down his face while Holmes rummaged him for weapons. Then my friend's wiry arms were round me and he was leading me to a chair.

"You're not hurt, Watson? For God's sake, say that you are not hurt!"

It was worth a wound - it was worth many wounds - to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation.

Finally we see that Holmes values Watson as he deserves!
