Why do people feel the need to force everyone to tick a ticky box that labels their sexuality? Why? Unless you label the box with my name, I 'aint ticking one. I don't understand the obsession. And I get annoyed when people seem to want to tick boxes for me without even asking my opinion. Figuratively speaking of course. (Granted they are usually just making the assumption that whatever box they decided to tick is the same one you would.)

Our society is obsessed with labelling shit. Get over it.

Fandom needs to get over it even more.

Knowing someone's sexual preferences can be useful if you're interested in having a relationship with them, but otherwise it's about as useful and interesting as knowing that they like the colour green better than red or prefer boxers over briefs.

(P.P.S - This doesn't change the fact that I will fight for equality any day. Not the point.)

My brother is obsessed with self help book and wanted to make me do a personality test (that takes 2 freakin' hours!!). I declined, saying that society was putting enough labels on people as it was.

I have two responses to this. The first is: "of course". The hetero/homo divide that our society is so obsessed with is another one of those really unhelpful dichotomies like male/female, black/white, rural/urban, etc, etc. I believe sexuality is a continuum and we're all somewhere along a broad spectrum. So putting people in boxes is ridiculous.

OTOH, for political purposes, I sometimes willingly box myself. So when the church is talking about homosexuality, that's the box I put myself into, and when society is talking about same-sex marriage, that's the box I put myself into. It's not an exact fit for me, if I have to define myself it's as a celibate bisexual, but sometimes I'll pin a different label on in order to fight for what I believe is right.

What brought this on, BTW? Are people labelling you? There's a big difference between self-labelling and being labelled.

Erm, lots of little things. Happy to discuss outside of this semi-public forum, but truly not coherent enough to answer in a simple way here. Heh.

(The meta fic... kinda expresses a lot of my views on sexuality. I kinda read it and went "huh, only took me years to come to a similar conclusion.")

Oh yes, we should definitely do coffee again. I'm sure you're terribly busy over Christmas, but in case you have a break when you can come into town, I'll be in Melbourne from Christmas Day and leaving on the afternoon of the 27th. Not much time in there I know. The family have booked a flat in the city I believe.
