I figure most writers were writing when they were young - or knew they could tell a story at least when they were at school (which I could never do..). Though I have also seen some people say they only started when they became involved in fandom.
I teach narrative writing at school and even though I can't write myself I have learned a lot from reading fanfic and reading congrit and those tutorials that appear every now and then. More than anything... the nature of POV.
I find though that I can't tell writers if I think their writing is bad. I tend to just not say anything. Though I think I learn more from reading bad writing.
