I agree with you totally! Although he's just following a habit he set up almost at the beginning. Looking for Dad? Looking for the Colt? Looking for Lilith? Looking for a way out of Dean's deal? And now, looking for a way to stop the Apocalypse?
"Well, hell, we're not finding anything, so let's just drive a thousand miles and spend a week or two investigating this random thing."
That played *almost* all right when the stakes were less high. But now it's the APOCALYPSE! After showing us what was going on so beautifully in 5.02 and 5.04, all they do is stand around, do a bit of hand-wringing, and then chase random, cracky things. I think the truth is that Kripke has no solid idea how to build this story toward the finale he planned, one good strong step at a time. As you said, he's just throwing things in as filler, and figuring if the characters keep *saying* it's the Apocalypse, that's good enough. I find that wildly annoying.
He's said any number of times that absolutely yes, the Apocalypse-Lucifer situation will wind up with 5.22. Which is good, because the half of the fandom that doesn't hate it is frustrated with the way he keeps ignoring his own story. We've got 14 episodes left, and I'd be willing to be that no more than 6 of them are strong storyline episodes like 5.02 and 5.04.
