Texans come hither!

If I were to find myself in the great state of Texas toward the end of April, what marvellous things might I be able to entertain myself with?

Are there things one absolutely must do when visiting Texas? Please do tell!

I'd be visiting someone in Dallas and possibly branching out from there depending on time etc.

Edit: Thanks guys, you're making me really want to go now. I am so going to try to sort my holiday time out ASAP. :)

I don't know much about Dallas, but if you can get to San Antonio I recommend The River Walk and El Mercado. Both locations have wonderful food, entertainment and shops.

I believe that the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is open in April and that is a definite must, particularly as a cultural experience. ;) Or the Mesquite Rodeo, which is also nearby and quite good.

Dallas also has the Sixth Floor Museum, which is all about the JFK assassination and is pretty interesting. If you don't want to pay/don't like museums, you might want to at least go by the assassination site. It's marked with an X on the road.

There's some good art museums in town, too.

If you want to go to a zoo, go to the Fort Worth zoo and not the Dallas Zoo.

ummm...that's all I can think of for now, but feel free to ask me anything! (I went to high school in a suburb of Dallas)

Oh, gosh. Will you have access to a car and be able to do a 3.5 hour drive, one-way? If you can, Austin is amazing. I live here, I love it. The Capitol and Texas State History Museum alone make a trip totally worth it. If you have 2-3 free days, you could drive down first thing, see both of those sights in Austin, then bop down to San Antonio for an evening on the Riverwalk (way awesome) and a mission tour the next day. So fun. Also, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is just a short drive from Austin proper, and the wildflowers will be MAD AWESOME that time of year. You really are picking one of the best times to come to Texas, weather-wise.

But Dallas area - ITA with [livejournal.com profile] ljmckay's suggestions (I, too, am from the Dallas area originally), and have a few additional suggestions:
- eat barbeque (I'm a fan of Baker's Ribs, on Greenville, but there are lots of amazing places)
- if you can get to Fort Worth, eat at Joe T. Garcia's
- hit the Dallas Arboretum (recently voted by Southern Living readers as one of the best in the South)
- if you're an art person, there are lots of fantastic museums, some of which may have something interesting to you that's showing (the Kimball and new Modern Art Museum in Ft Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Crow Asian Art Collection, the Nasher Sculpture Garden)
- depending on when you're there, you could catch a home game of the Texas Rangers - baseball tickets don't tend to be too expensive, and it's a gorgeous ballpark - plus, BASEBALL!
- if you'll be in north Dallas, it may be easier (and will definitely be cheaper) to hit a minor league baseball game instead (like the Frisco Roughriders; also a really neat ballpark
- if you feel like seeing some good ol' Texas two-steppin' (most popular dance of Texas) and riding a mechanical bull, get over to Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth
- go see Jensen Ackles' boyhood home. Just kidding, but if you wanted to see the high school he went to, it's in Richardson, which is the suburb immediately north of Dallas. ;-)

There's just tons and tons and tons of stuff to do in Dallas, even if you can't get very far out of town. Also, the whole "uptown" area is hella fun - my sister lives there, and she LOVES IT. Fireside Pies is fantastic, if you're feeling like pizza at any point.

I'd be happy as a clam to answer any questions about Dallas/Texas/whatever - just let me know! I love Texas, and I love talking about it. :-D

I've never been there (I really don't travel as I'm kinda afraid of flying. lol), but if you find Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and/or Lee Pace (all Texas natives), be sure to send one of them my way. XD

And have you tried searching the internet for famous sites in Texas and things to do. Usually pretty helpful! :)
