A completely random rambling

Sometimes I'm amazed that I'm still online. Apparently even after a couple of years of randomly wandering the web, I can still annoy the crap out of people by breaking rules (or "nettiquette") that I am completely unaware of.

Seriously, if someone says I did something wrong, I always chuckle, apologize and try to reverse said mistake immediately. Once I've apologized and put my online self into emergency reverse, once I've done that, what's the point of berating me further? What's the point of swearing at me for several more posts or (and I've seen it done) calling in a lynch mob of your friends? *scratches head* I personally think you make yourself look rather petty, especially when I politely agree with your point and offer suggestions to prevent others like me from falling into the same mistakes.

This has happened on more than one occasion and I'm sure it happens to everyone. It's the reason I ask my questions quite openly and bluntly upfront before joining boards or communities that I'm unsure of.

If I hadn't met a lot of nice people online when I first tried out all these strange new things (In my first RPG I godmoded and had a nice person explain (hello CW) why this isn't done, the first few people I tried to friend on LJ berated me about "friending policies" until a few nice people randomly friended me and made me realise this isn't normal behaviour), I think I would have run for the hills by now.

I guess it's too much to ask people to be civil online when the real world is so messed up, but sometimes it makes me sad.

People, find your happy place and chill! *hugs you all*

*returns hug* Sorry you've wandered into badness. I know how it feels though. I'm new to this, and I'm still wondering half the time if I'm breaking tons of unwritten rules that I have no clue about. :) Especially about the friending thing.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :)

The friending thing is non-existant. Their are a few crazies that if you ask if it's ok to friend them, see that as some sort of insult or as begging to be friended back or something. I've never understood that one for the life of me.

This is just a general comment, since it's been at least a week since I've personally stumbled into badness and been berated, but I've been seeing a lot of it lately. It's amazing how usually sane people suddenly get a bee in their bonnet and go at someone. It resembles the bad parts of real life a little too closely some days.

*hugs you back* The very first time I posted anything (way back with the X-Files) I got flamed, badly. Scorched would be a better description. I don't even remember my offense, but it was an offense of ignorance not malice. If several people had not jumped to my defense (and then taken me aside and explained my mistake) I would have thought the internet was way to dangerous a place to be. But I've come to realize that there are no universal rules. So I just try to be as polite and accepting as possible. And if people still have a problem, well there is not much I can do about that. So I try not to worry about it. But it can still be stressful. *hugs again*

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I'm not worried, I've just seen a few weird things lately and it's saddening. Felt like commenting, ya know. Like I said, I think we've all done it, which is why I wonder why the flaming still continues. It's like kids in a boarding school. It was done to them, so now it's their turn to do it...why not just break the cycle? Hippy peace and love man. :)

*huggles you*

You're one of the politest people I've ever seen online, and yeah, people should learn just to chill out a little.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, chill! Be happy! Rainbows and butterflies and hot fandom men. :)

[identity profile] lightz474.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Aw hon. Don't let whomever is bugging ya get to you. I've been called a bitch and a snob by people who I thought were dear online friends. Sometimes life is way too short to worry about those few people that seem nice at first and later turn into crazy yelling online people. *huggles ya* Also everyone makes mistakes and if they can't forgive you then they aren't really such a good friend after all.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
*huggzz* Yep.

[identity profile] raisintorte.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
::hugs::

I'm sorry someone yelled at you! People can be so cranky.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes indeed. Just felt like commenting. *hugs*

It sucks that the Internet often brings out the worst in people. Luckily there are still some lovely people online. *hugs*

That is possibly the coolest icon ever! :D

*grins* I love it too! It's a quote from House M.D., and is even more amusing when its said by Hugh Laurie! :)

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I can so see that! :D

[identity profile] emma-mage.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch. We've all been there. It's like, Geez, and I thought I was "sensitive." I'm glad the crazies didn't completely traumatize you! Knock on wood that none of us here have any more bad encounters.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* Long time no chat! :)
Yeah, you mumble along and then one emerges from the woodwork when you least expect it. *shakes head*

(Also, you might like this (http://starrylizard.livejournal.com/257436.html). Self-pimps shamelessly! :P)

*hugs back* I was in Vancouver for nearly 2 months!

Pimp away, as long as it spreads the minority ship love. :-) It was a beautifully sad fic. He'd make a sweet guardian angel. *sentimentally wrings hankie*

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh lovely! Vancouver is a great city. I want to go back sometime. :D

Glad you like the fic. :D

Have you heard the latest Beckett squee (for S4) or has Vancouver kept you from it?!

[identity profile] emma-mage.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ironic that being in Vancouver of all places would cut me off from Stargate fandom, eh? lol I'm caught up on the squee though. I just read a Shoreleave con report that reported that PM had said he would be in four episodes in season 4. Well, that's twice as good as two!

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Woo! :D

[identity profile] merlins-sister.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs*

You are a lovely, polite person. It's just the rest of them.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I know. In fact I take great delight in remaining polite in all my dealings with such crazies. Then they come off looking fairly insane. :P
*hugs*

[identity profile] mistojen.livejournal.com 2007-07-24 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey Lizzie...start following my motto (it feels awesome to say cheerfully out loud, too...seriously, try it!):

FUCK em! :D

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2007-07-25 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Heee! *twirls you*

(Finds the right icon! :P)
