The culture medium was changed to serum-free medium 24 hours before the phosphate uptake assay was to be carried out. For transfection experiments, cells were subcultured into 24-well plates at a density of approximately 60 000 to 100 000 cells per well in a volume of 500 µL per well. The culture medium was changed every 2 to 4 days until the cells had reached ~80% confluence and the transfection was carried out in Optimem (Gibco BRL Life Technologies, Gaithersburg, MA, USA) supplemented with 2% FCS (v/v) and...
