Computer help?

Okay, I have an external hard drive (500GB) that works fine on my old computer, but when I plug it into the new computer it doesn't like it.

To be more precise it says "Unknown device" and in the device function summary it tells me "windows has stopped the device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Anyone have any idea what that's about? It's the HD I usually do my vidding from and it's still working when I plug it into the old computer.

Edit: I've tried switching the cable with the one from a HD that does read fine, but it didn't help, so not a cable problem.

(I feel like such a geek with two computers whirring away side by side right now.)

Is the harddrive meant to be compatible with whatever brand of windows the new computer is running?

No idea. It's one Yokiem's bro bought me a few years back. It is pre-Windows 7, so it may be the problem. The other two (newer hard drives) I own plug and play fine.

Any idea of the brand of the harddrive?

It could be the problem...

GigaSave USB 2.0 Smart backup HDD

Just off to dinner, but I'll keep searching later.

Otherwise I may transfer it all to another hard drive and ditch it. But its the cutest little hard drive. It'd make me sad to ditch it.

That's probably the problem, see if you can find a driver for windows 7 or update it (devicemanager --> doubleclick on the hardware --> update driver)

Nope it then tells me that "The best driver for the device is already installed" O_o

Thanks though.

I thought it would, it usually does, you still should look for a new driver.

So far google is no help. I don't even know who manufactured this HD. *gah*

That is not helpful to find something...

Nope. Somehow I don't think there's gonna be drivers out there for it. *sigh*

Mmh, maybe there's a way around it, it worked with my old scanner and my new laptop...
