Saddest ending ever.

Space: Above and Beyond has the saddest ending ever. Seriously? I was crying!

Cooper as he sits on Vansen's bed: "Now I know how she felt her whole life. I lost my mother and father on the same day."

And then the pan shot out with just Cooper and West lying on fallen comrades beds and... shit! So sad, way too sad. And the whole reveal with the Chig... Ugh. *sniffle* Way to take your show out with a bang and some realism to boot.

And to make myself feel a little better I made me a McQueen icon. *points* I volunteer to enter sci-fi land in order to sit a vigil at his bedside. *nods* It's a tough gig, but I'm willing to do it.

It's been YEARS since I saw this. Didn't like everyone die or something??

They went to rescue the prisoner transport that has West's girlfriend on board. Vansen and Damfus (sp?) were piloting the rescue ship and they get blown off the ship and pulled into the nearest planet's gravity. West is piloting the other ship and Wang was on weapons. In order to save the prisoners they had to drop their passenger hold and grab the other one... but Wang was trapped in the passenger hold, so he drops it with him in it and goes down shooting the Chigs so West can grab the prisoner transport. So only West and Cooper (who was in the same bit as the prisoners) survive out of the Wildcards.

And McQueen was earlier injured when the Chig blew up the negotiations.

So yeah, the last bit was West and Cooper all alone in the Wildcard quarters looking absolutely devastated and poor Cooper has just realised how much more than just friends McQueen and Vansen were to him (being an invitro they'd become his parental figures).

Seriously Sad! Like I'm tearing up again. *sniff*

I know I watched that ages ago but I can't remember a bloody thing!

Maybe it was so sad you cleared it from your memory. *nods*

It was on probably 15 years ago at leasr. I was still in high school. I've just always wanted to watch it, because they had it on (as with all sci fi here) at some ridiculous hour of the morning and it was just not possible, even though it looked good. Plus one of the main guys behind the show was a writer form the X Files and I was a huge fan of the X Files at the time.

Maybe...

Yeah, I get the ridiculous hour, here too, it has changed a bit in the last years but most Sci-Fi shows are still aired after 10pm...

I think I'm just gonna put it on my rewatch list XD

Oh yeah. I remember that one.

I don't think I'd seen a series end on such a DOWNER since Blake's 7 and I probably haven't seen another since. The bit where Vansen says goodbye over the radio, knowing she and Damfus are going to die, was the bit that got me (not sure if I remember right, but I think Vansen had a half-chance of surviving but she refused to leave Damfus who was unconscious).

*pats shoulder*

And greetings from Newcastle! Upon-Tyne, that is. Not the one just a short-ish drive up the freeway.

I think Vansen had a half-chance of surviving but she refused to leave Damfus who was unconscious.

Exactly! She could have free-parachuted out or something, but you can't do that when you're unconscious. But you see, I thought she survived at first, like I really thought they'd go back and pick them up, so I only realised she an Damfus didn't make it when they were telling McQueen as he was about to be shipped back to Earth. Wong getting blown up was less hard to believe he survived. But, the whole show had been them surviving in places that no other team did, so I really hadn't expected such a sad ending. :(

And all through the season they built McQueen and Vansen up to be parental figures for Cooper and did it reasonably subtly for the show (It wasn't a real subtle show that way), just letting it be obvious without pointing it out too much, and then that final remark from Cooper is such a gut punch.

Sad, sad.

Anyhow, hope you're enjoying the other Newcastle. You know I talk to you on LJ more when you're overseas than when we're only a 3 hour drive away. I guess you get on the computer a bit more. :)

Edit, let me try those tags again. :P

Well, when I'm overseas I do have fewer kindy & preschoolers tugging at my ankles during my rec time. And guess what this reply was sent to you courtesy of my iPhone using free wifi at the Newcastle Quayside.

Edited to include "teaser" new icon...

I used to love Space: Above and Beyond, but sadly no-one seems to know what I'm talking about when I say things like, "See that new version of Battlestar Galactica? It may be brilliant and everything, but it owes a hell of a lot to Space: Above and Beyond." A sadly underrated and under-appreciated show.

And yeah. Saddest. Ending. Ever. (Although I'm still waiting to see how Supernatural's going to end...)

Weirdly I liked the S4 ending of SPN. I could have stopped there. It'll be interesting to see what S5 brings though.

I kind of likened Space: Above and Beyond to the movie Aliens actually. I could imagine if the military characters that go down with sigourny to the planet got more of a story, it'd be a bit like Space: Above and Beyond. I can see what you mean by the feel of the new BSG though too. :)
