Possession (SPN, PG, Gen)

Um, not sure about this one, but with my writing in such a dry spell, I figured I'd post it anyway. I'd love to know if it works. I'm not sure. And with that intro I'm sure you all want to read it, right? *G*

Title: Possession
Author: [livejournal.com profile] starrylizard
Fandom: Supernatural
Genre/rating: Pre-season, Gen, PG, 734 words
Characters: Meg, Bela
Excerpt: The woman paused just inside the doorway to close up her handbag-sized umbrella and brush some sleet off her leather jacket. She quirked an eyebrow at Meg and flashed a smile.
Notes: Beta by [livejournal.com profile] rinkle, but I messed with it since, so all mistakes are mine. Set pre-season, or at least before we see Meg as a demon in S1.

Meg sighed, pausing to stretch her back and push a lock of short blonde hair out of her face. She went back to wiping down the last of the benches in the diner, carefully placing the salt and pepper shakers neatly in the center. Business was slow today, the regular drizzle of sleety rain keeping most people tucked away indoors. Meg sighed again, before throwing the dishrag in a perfect arc toward the sinks behind the serving counter, doing a mini-touchdown dance at getting it in, and then meandering back to the cash register.

A tinkle of bells above the main entrance made her look up in hope. Anyone, anything to break the boredom. She was expecting one of the regulars from the nearby offices, but the person that walked in was far more interesting. Tall with dark hair, piercing blue-grey eyes below perfectly shaped eyebrows. In fact everything about the woman was perfect. From her fashionable shoes to the tint in her hair, she looked like a model or a singer, someone you’d see on TV, and Meg was instantly fascinated. This woman was certainly not the usual clientèle that Jim’s Home Diner attracted.

The woman paused just inside the doorway to close up her handbag-sized umbrella and brush some sleet off her leather jacket. She quirked an eyebrow at Meg and flashed a smile.

“Is the weather always like this?”

Her accent was English, clipped and soft around the edges and Meg found herself smiling back.

“Oh no, usually it’d be snowing this late in February. What can I get you?”

“Coffee, lots of coffee.” The woman rolled her eyes, before she grinned again. “And something sweet.”

“The lemon pie is great today.”

The woman glanced down at her name badge. “That sounds absolutely heavenly, Meg!”

The lady took a seat. Meg watched with fascination as she carefully brushed off the vinyl surface, before laying down her jacket and sliding across the booth.

She smiled up at Meg when she poured the coffee and brought a larger than usual slice of pie. “Thank you, darling. You wouldn’t believe my day.”

“Did you break down or something? Forgive me for asking, but you’re not the usual type passes through Andover…” Meg left the sentence hanging.
“Bela, the name’s Bela. And, yes, that’s right. I’m stuck for a little bit.”

Out of habit, Meg swiped at the already clean table top as she spoke, her necklace slipped out from her blouse as she did so and Bela noticed, her eyes narrowing with interest.

“That’s lovely, where’s it from?”

“Oh, this? It was my grandmother’s, been in the family for longer than I know. Grams always said it’d protect me from ‘possession by evil,’ or some such. She gave it to me when she died; told me to wear it always.” Meg fingered her necklace as she spoke, remembering her Grandmother fondly. “Grams was always superstitious like that. I just thought it was pretty. Our family goes right back to the witch trials, you know? They took quite a few women in this area back then.”

“That’s quite a history. I didn’t know that.” Bela took her eyes off the necklace to smile up at Meg.

“Well, if you need anything, just give a holler.” Meg started to walk away, leaving Bela to eat in peace, but a light hand on her arm stopped her.

“If you’re not busy, why not stop for a moment and keep me company?”

Meg grinned, peeking back over her shoulder and visualising the kitchens where the cook would no doubt be half asleep or contentedly reading the newspaper by now. No other customers in sight.

“Sure, why not.”

***

Three hours later, Meg turned the sign in the doorway so the “closed” faced the street. Bela had left an hour ago and apart from a drunk after some coffee, it had quite likely been the slowest day in the diner’s history.

Turning back from the door, her eyes were drawn to a dark shape, like black smoke exiting the heating duct.

She instinctively backed up against the locked door, reaching for the door handle, though she knew it was pointless even as she did. And as the demon entered her body, her hands came up to clutch at her necklace.

“Protect me from evil,” she whispered.

But the necklace was gone.

Well, Bela did more mischief than we'd thought, eh?

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
She probably never knew though. The idea just intrigued me. :)

Very nice twist! Liked it. :)

Thanks Thady! :)

Awww, sort of cool but sad too.

Thank you! The idea just intrigued me.

:-)

I like it! :-)

(Psst... Turning back to the diner’s interior. Bela

Fragment - needs revising)

Sure, thanks!
(What sentence, I don't see no sentence fragment. You jest, methinks! :P)

Very nicely done. I really like the idea of having Meg and Bela cross paths, and having Bela be tied to Meg's possession. I also like your characterization of Meg prior to being possessed. It's interesting thinking about what she might have been like.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's nice to know the characterisation of Meg as a small town girl works for you. Plus, we already know Bela steals these sorts of things without too much thought for the consequences, so the idea intrigued me. Thank you! :)

Nifty little possibility here. I think it will be what happened to Meg in my head from now on.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh cool! Thank you! I'm glad it worked for you. :)

Oh, a very nice twist. I like that Meg's family did have some knowledge of the supernatural - perhaps it made her a target - but the knowledge had become diluted and dismissed over the years, to be exploited by someone like Bela.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I looked up the area and, according to wiki (not the most trustworthy site, but still), people in Andover, MA got involved in the Salem witch trials and several of their women were burned. So, that got me thinking. :)

Glad you liked the twist. Thank you! :)

I really love this. Awesome idea.
And poor Meg.

Thank you very much! :)

That bitch! Great Bela and Meg backstory. Now I really feel sorry for Meg.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's the sort of thing Bela would do without much thought as to possible consequences. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

Great story! Leave it to Bela to ruin someone else's life! Love, Robin

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep and without even thinking that she might be doing it too. Thank you for your comments! :)

Hehehehe, good story. Clever idea!

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! :)

Very interesting. Lots of paths crossed, eh?

Lovely, lovely stuff.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the idea intrigued me that they could've met and Bela's just doing her thing...without much thought to possible consequences. Thank you very much! :)

[identity profile] charis-kalos.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I like this a lot! Absolutely Bela-like, the creepy thief, and nice to see a pre-possession Meg. I liked her, both possessed and un-possessed.

I don't know what happened to Bela in the end, but I know that the actress isn't going to be around in Season Four, so I'm guessing something nasty went down. Which will make me happy. If I ever get to see it.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, I actually like Bela and I've heard a lot of people that hated her liked her once they saw her demise. But each to their own. Thanks for reading! I'm glad it worked for you! :D

[identity profile] charis-kalos.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I liked Bela - well, I liked to dislike her and boo and hiss at her as though she was a pantomime villain. I just didn't want her redeemed and seeing the error of her ways, I liked her strong and wicked.

[identity profile] starrylizard.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you'll still like her. :)
Come on channel TEN! *berates them*

Come on channel TEN! *berates them*

Yes, they've had THREE postcards from me now! Maybe I really don't run the universe?
