A thought on SPN 4x6

This was a very interesting, as well as amusing episode. Just a random thought though. I know everyone is talking about Sam's yellow eyes or the fact that Dean isn't a dick, but it was actually something else that struck me first time around watching this.

When it all got bad, when the hallucinations were going to kill him... Dean clutched a copy of the Bible.

So, does he now believe? Since Castiel dragged him from the pit, has he come around to his way of thinking? Or, has he always believed deep down and this show-cased it? Or was the book just handy and it seemed like he may as well give it a shot?

Just, for a character who has always denied the possibility of God, it seemed like a odd thing to do. He seemed to definitely draw comfort from the Bible. I'd almost go so far as to say he was praying.

Thoughts?

My thoughts exactly. That moment actually made me cry a little. He was so desperate to not be sent back to hell that he was actually praying. :(

I'm actually making an animation (and possibly icons) of that moment right now, heehee! It was so subtle and easy to miss, but it was one of my favourite moments of the episode. :)

I think Dean *wants* to believe, and in that moment of terrible extremity, he hoped that the same God who ordered him yanked out of Hell the first time would call up another miracle, now. It makes a certain sense, because why waste a miracle, right? And picking up the Bible might have been sort of like picking up the phone, in Dean's panicked mind, and hoping like crazy someone was on the other end.

Something like that, anyhow. It made my heart just ache, that's for sure.

I think having an angel drag him out of hell was convincing. Besides, Castiel's a bad-ass and Dean's gotta like that.

I just thought that it was a desperate measure - plus he wasn't himself at that point as the illness made you inexplicably scared of everything you wouldn't have been scared of before - so rather than him believing, it was just a desperate thing a really scared person might do - that's how I saw it.
