I glanced at this essay earlier today, linked from [livejournal.com profile] cofax7's LJ. I haven't had the time to read through it thoroughly so I haven't responded, but my first reaction is to disagree with it utterly. Fact and Fantasy are separate, not only in that fanfiction characters are not real, but also in the way fiction is perceived differently by the reader as evidenced by the fact that a lot of writers who write incest are incest survivors -- for example, me.

I've written lots of incest stories and will continue to write more. The thought that my stories in any way promote incest is akin to the idea that teaching sex education to teens promotes premarital sex. It's the same concept that if we don't talk about it, it will go away. Bullshit.

You know what this article boils down to really? [livejournal.com profile] heatherly doesn't like incest and chan and non-con stories, and doesn't want to be associated with them in fandom. My immediate knee-jerk response to that is: Tough shit.

By her definition Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" was irresponsible and should not have been written given the predictable reaction of mainstream Muslims.

Responsible my ass... I read it again later when it doesn't piss me off so much.
